Porifera Flashcards
1
Q
what animals are part of this group?
A
sponges
2
Q
What do they lack?
A
true tissues
3
Q
what are true tissues?
A
a group of specialised cells that act as a functional unit and are isolated from the other groups of cells by membranous layers
4
Q
Some sponges have sharp ______. what are they made of?
A
Spincules. made of calcium carbonate or silica or spongin
5
Q
What is mesophyll?
A
a dynamic tissue comprised of moving cells- they lack muscle but can remodel body.
6
Q
What are the three sponge structures?
A
- asconoid
- syconoid
- leuconoid
7
Q
Explain a asconoid structure
A
- simplest structure
- the size is limited due to the fact they only have a single layer of choanocytes limiting ability to pump water and trap food and oxygen
8
Q
explain the syconoid structure
A
- body wall is pleated
- the inner pockets are lined with choanocytes increasing the number of them so they are able to pump more water and oxygen and therefore grow to be bigger
9
Q
explain the leuconoid structure
A
interior is completely filled with mesophyll that contains a network of chambers lined with choanocytes
