What was populism?
An agrarian movement - left wing
Their aim was to dismantle the US and rebuild it
Why did populism become prominent?
Angry farmers -
There was a fall in crop prices as there was an increase in agricultural ground and trade from overseas.
Banks mortgaged properties and high payments.
Railroads: discriminatory rates
High tariff due to consumers feeling like they pay customer goods.
Loss of status - Jefferson’s idea of a nation of farmers was eroded by industrialisation.
What did the populists/farmers do?
Creation of the populist party - anti banks, rail roads, elites and gold standards.
National Grange of the Patrons 1867 - Lobbying, cooperatives.
Why did Populism fail?
Failed to win urban support
Lack of support meant they couldn’t win polls.
What was Progressivism: 1900-1917 ?
Involve with richer, high educated conservatives.
Aim was to improve the US rather than dismantling it
What was the Wisconsin Idea?
Belief that experts should improve city life.
Use state universities to promote change.
Who was Robert La Follette?
He changed income taxing, railroad/bank regulation, curbs on lobbying, limits on working hours.

Addams - helped poor and children and industrial places. Helped immigrants
Barnet-Rice - Anti-noise pollution
Nation - anti-smoke pollution
