Populations Flashcards
Habitat
The place where a community of organisms lives.
Population
A group of interbreeding organisms of one species in a habitat.
Community
All the populations of different organisms living and interacting in a particular place at the same time.
Ecosystem
Made up of all the interacting biotic and abiotic features in a specific area.
Ecological niche
How an organism fits into the environment- where it lives and what it does there.
Ecology
The study of inter-relationships between organisms and their environment.
Investigating populations using quadrats
- Set out two tape measures at right angles to form axes
- Use a random numbers table to generate two numbers which will act as coordinates
- Place the quadrat at the given coordinates
- Find the mean number of species per quadrat
- Multiply by the size of the area being sampled.
What to consider when using quadrats
- The size of the quadrat
- The number of sample quadrats to record within the study area
- The position of each quadrat within the study area
Transects
A line through an area to be studied to identify changes to the area
Line transect
A tape measure is placed along the transect and species that touch the tape measure are recorded.
Belt transect
Quadrants are placed next to each other along the transect to work out species frequency and percentage cover along a transect.
