Populations Flashcards
What is a species?
A group of similar organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring.
What is a population?
A group of organisms of the same species living in a particular area at a particular time.
What is a gene pool?
The complete range of alleles in a population.
What is the Hardy-Weinberg Principle?
A mathematical method that proves that the frequency of alleles in a population won’t change from one generation to the next.
What conditions are needed for the Hardy-Weinberg Principle to work?
- A large population with no immigration, immigration, mutations and natural selection.
- Random mating
What is the allele frequency equation?
p + q = 1
p is the frequency of the dominant allele
q is the frequency of the recessive allele
What is the genotype frequency equation?
p2 + 2pq + q2 =1
when p is the dominant allele and q is the recessive allele. p2 = Homozygous dominant
q2 = Homozygous recessive
2pq= Heterozygous
When can this not be used?
- The organisms are more likely to die before reproducing.
- The organisms aren’t able to grow sufficiently to reproduce successfully.
- Organisms aren’t able to attract a mate.
