Q

What is the hardy Weinberg principle

A

Allows us to estimate the frequency of alleles in a population as well as if allele frequency is changing over time

Q

Give assumptions made by the hardy Weinberg principle

A
  • no mutation occur to create new alleles
  • no migration in or out of the population
  • o selection occurs, so alleles are all equally passed on to next gen
  • random mating
  • large population

Q

Calculation for frequency of alleles

A

p+ q = 1

p = frequency of teh dominant allele

9
Q

Hardy Weinberg equation for calculating genotype and phenotype frequency

A

p2 + 2pq + q2 = 1

p2 = frequency of homozygous dominant phenotype/genotype

q2 = frequency of homozygous recessive phenotype/genotype

2pq = frequency of heterozygous genotype/phenotype
