Population Pyramids Flashcards
What is a population pyramid?
A piece of data that shows the population (males and females) along with their age over time, and shows the variety of the population their is by their age. An example would be: The population for 5-9 year olds is 10 million for the boys but only 6 million for the girls - this information tells us that the data was probably taken from a city like China where they turn to have boys more than girls.
What does the shape tell us about the population in the are where the results were taken from?
The shape of the graph differs from every single county to country to a world scale. It can show that the population of females 0-4 is 12 million while the 65 - 69 for females is next to none as the results were taken from a distinctly poor country. While another shape of the pyramid could show the results from another country, like the UK, where the birth rate is significantly lower than the poorer country but there is a huge spike for 85+ as the elderly are living for a long time.
What are the similarities between population pyramids and Demographic Transition Model?
Like Demographic Transition Model a population pyramid can have stages 1 through 5. As there are the 5 stages, the statistics and information gathered have to go with the shape of a pyramid and the country you got the statistics and information from.
What is the population structure of a country?
It’s how many people there are in each age group of the population, and how many there are in each sex.
