Population Modelling Flashcards
What are the aims of population ecology?
To understand and predict dynamics of populations.
To use models to design conservation action and management strategies.
How do births relate to population dynamics?
Clutch size and fledgling success: very variable between species, is variable within species, dependent on age, experience and body condition. e.g. female sparrowhaws tend to have more young as they increase in age up to a point, then less with age.
Number of breeding attempts: birds are seasonal breeders, dependent on latitude - in south may have more broods. Dependent on habitat sturcture.
How do deaths relate to to population dynamics?
- predation
- disease
- starvation
How do immigration and emigration relate to populaiton dynamics?
recruitment to a population depends on the number of young produced and surving locally and immigration from the outside area.
