Population Growth Flashcards
Birth rate
of live births per 1000 people. Determined by demographic structure: # of ppl in childbearing yrs, and total fertility rate: # of life births an ave woman has in her lifetime; determined by age specific birth statistics
Mortality rate
of deaths per 1000 ppl
Stationary population
A pop w a 0 growth rate due to birth rate = mortality rate
Replacement rate
The fertility rate that brings birth rate and mortality rate into balance within a pop. Leads to a stationary pop (25yrs)
Output
O=L * X where o = output level, X is the output per worker, L is the # of workers. Dividing both sides by pop. O=L. X
P P
Output per capita (o/p) is determined by the multiplication of output per worker (x) and the share of pop (L/p) that is in the labour force
Age structure effect
Results from changes in the age distribution of the pop.
Youth effect
Result of rapidly growing pop creating a large supply of young people too young to work
Femal availability effect
Rapid pop growth reduces the % of women able to join the labour force bc there are more children to care for
Retirement effect
Result of a slowly growing pop creating a larger % of ppl over 65. Negative effect on economic growth
Tech. Progress
Provides 1 means of escaping the law of diminishing marginal productivity. As long as there’s continual tech. Progress than pop growth will increase output per worker
