What is the difference of growth rates in LEDCs and MEDCs?
LEDCs have the fastest populations growth
MEDCs have a very low growth rate, from 1,4% to 0%
Why did the population start rising so fast after 1950?
Vaccines and penicillin was developed, food was more available and sanitation and water became better
What is a population explosion?
A very rapid increase in population
What is overpopulation?
When the increase in population causes a serious lowering in the living standards in that area
Why do people in poorer countries have so many children?
The parents depend on the children when they are old and need the extra hands for labour or make them get a job so there is more income for the family
What caused the population explosion?
Major improvements in technology, food production and medical care. This caused the death rates to lower.
What are the consequences of the population explosion?
There was not enough food and space for the number of people. This meant the government will have to double the number of facilities which puts a strain on the country’s economy
How can governments control the population growth?
They can offer education about and access to contraception, abortion and sterilization. The offer rewards for having smaller families or getting married later.
How did China try to control the population growth?
They introduced a One Child policy. However this caused female infanticide, parents wanted their child to be a boy so they killed their daughters.
How did Russia try to control the population growth?
They offered a bonus to women who would have a second child as their population was decreasing quickly.
How did India try to control the population growth?
They offered prizes, like cars, to people who got sterilized to try and lower their population.
