Population Geography Flashcards
Demography
The statistical study of human population, with particular emphasis upon quantitative aspects.
Rates
record the frequency of occurrence of an event during a given time frame for a designated population
CBR(Crude Birth Rate)
CBR is the annual number of live births per 1000 population, often referred to as the birth rate.
Total Fertility Rate
the amount of children needed to be born in order for population to stay “normal”
CDR(Crude Death Rate)
annual number of deaths per 1,000 people(death rate)
Rate of Natural Increase(RNI)
CBR - CDR =(answer) express answer as percent
Doubling Time
Amount of time it takes population to double in size. Formula: 70/RNI. RNI exposed as whole number
Crude Density
number of people per unit of land
Problems with Crude Density
*figure is misleading because all land is used including undeveloped or uninhabitable land with the developed districts
Arable land
land where crops are grown
Problems with Physiological Density
- depends on uncertain definitions of land classified as arable
- assumes all arable land is equally productive
Four Generalizing Conclusions on Population
- 90% of all people live north of equator
- ½ people live on 5% of land
- people congregate in lowland areas
- 2/3 of world’s population live within 300 miles of the ocean
Where do People Live?
- East Asia 25% worlds Population
- South Asia 21-22% Population
- Europe 13% Worlds Population
- N.E. U.S./S.E. Canada 8-9% (smallest cluster)
