Population Dynamics Flashcards
What are K- strategists?
Species that care for their offspring for long periods of time typically in small numbers with long lifespans
What are R- strategists?
Species that provide minimal care to their offspring while mating often and producing many offspring typically having shorter lifespans
What are the three types of dispersion?
Clumped, Uniform, Random
What are density- dependent and density independent factors?
Biotic and abiotic factors that affect a population either more or not more as populations increase.
What is a metapopulation?
Groups of conspecific populations in different places at same time
What is seasonal variation?
A difference in environment during a specific time of year
What is fecundity?
The reproductive rate of a population
What is natality?
The ratio of the number of births to the size of the population.
What is divergent evolution?
Type where a common ancestor evolves into two distinct species due to differing environmental pressures Two examples are wolf = fox & dog or primephalas sp. = mammoth and elephants
What is convergent evolution?
Type where different organisms unrelated have evolved similar traits due to environmental pressures in the same environment or a similar different one Two examples are bats & whales or penguins and orcas
What is parallel evolution?
Type where similar
development of a trait in distinct
species that are not closely related,
but share a similar original trait in
response to similar evolutionary
pressure.Tasmanian wolf and the European wolf
What is dissolution?
Breakdown of a breeding pair
What are emerging diseases?
Recently appeared diseases
What are negative and positive predator prey interactions?
predation, parasitism, herbivory, neutralism, ammensalism, competition, commensalism, symbiosis, mutualism
What is an ecological niche?
characteristics that are dictated by the unique environmental and biological conditions found in them. Like from tempereature.
