Population Data Flashcards
What is a national census
A census is a count of the entire population, taken every 10 years in the uk
What data is collected in the national census and why
Social and economic characteristics are collected e.g religion, job ect
Information used to help government develop policies, plan services (schools, health centres, resurface road, public transport and libraries)
Is the national census static or dynamic data
Static- taken once every 10 years
What specific 7 sectors are looked at in the national spcensu
Population: help allocate funding
Education: location and changes to education services
Health and safety: make sure focus is concentrated on most needed areas
Housing: help prepare for future demand
Employment: help plan jobs and training
Ethnic groups: help allocate resources to ensure equality
Transport: how and where people work to help manage pressures and improve public transport systems
In LEDCS what is the reliability issues with their data collection methods (10)
Literacy levels
Lifestyle
Size
Fluid population
Cost
Mapping inaccuracies
Transport difficulties
Cultural traits
Language barriers
Lack of reference
Why is literacy levels a reliability issue
Poor education rates in LEDCS means that few people can read and write, therefore many would be unable to complete the census
Why is lifestyles a reliability issue
Nomadic tribes and families may be difficult to find and might migrate across international boundaries
Why is size a reliability issue
Larger countries with countless scattered villages e.g India can make the process of census organisation difficult
Why is fluid population a reliability issue
Centres of mass migratory population, like the shanty towns in São Paulo, Brazil have a transient population high is difficult to analyse
Why is cost a reliability issue
Many LEDCs do not have the money to spend on this big task
Why is transport difficulties a reliability issue
Difficult for the people taking the census to gain access to some places which can be made worse by seasonal rains or weather patterns
Why is cultural traits a reliability issue
In some areas in the Middle East enumerators are not allowed to interview women
Why is language barriers a reliability issue
Tribal/ethnic languages can sometimes cause obstacles
Why is lack of reference a reliability issue
Some people are not aware of what age they are as the have no real point of reference from which to work this out
What is vital registration
A more DYNAMIC aspect of population data where the number of births, deaths and marriages are monitored EVERYDAY
Why are births, deaths and marriages asked for in a vital registration
Health professionals use this information to plan for health services, schools, burial plots and monitor the effectiveness of their interventions
