Define death rate
The number of deaths per thousand people per year in a country.
Define fertility rate
The number of live births per 1000 women of the childbearing age group (15-44) in her lifetime.
Define infant mortality rate
The number of infant deaths (one year of age or younger) per 1000 live births.
Define literacy rate
The percentage of the population able to read and write over the age of 15.
Define life expectancy
The number of years that a baby born in a certain year in a country can be expected to live.
Define Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
The total value of all goods and services produced within a country in a year. It is often expressed as GDP per capita, which is the GDP divided by the population.
What are some characteristics to show a developed country?
- Low birth rate
- High life expectancy
- Stable or decreasing population
- More equal numbers of people in each age category
- High literacy rate
- High G.D.P
- High quality health care
- Established education systems
- High per capita income
- Majority of the population engaged in tertiary industries (e.g services)

- A large percentage of the population is under 15 years of age

- Poor or inconsistent health care
- Emerging education systems
- Low per capita income
- Majority of the population engaged in primary industries (e.g farming, mining etc.)
Define developing country
A country that is poor, has a bad standard of living and is seeking to develop its resources by industrialization.
Define developed country
A country with a highly developed economy and good standard of living.
Define income per capita
Per capita income is the mean/average money income for people over 15 years old. It can be calculated by doing income divided by population.
Define natural increase
A natural increase is a population increase due to more births and less mortality.
Define birth rate
The number of live births per 1000 people per year in a country.
How do you find GDP per capita?
Divide the country’s GDP by the population.
