Population And Resources Flashcards
What is birth rate
The number of babies born per 1000 ppl per year in a country
What is death rate
The number of ppl per 1000 who die per year in a country
What is total fertility rate
Within a country, the average number of children that a woman has in her lifetime
What is replacement rate
The total fertility rate required to keep a country’s population stable
What is the Thomas Malthus theory
Eventually, exponentially growing population will outstrip arithmetically growing food supply leading to famine disease and war. These would bring the population down to a sustainable level
What is the Esther boserup theory
As population approaches food supply, we near the crisis at which Malthusian checks (famine, disease, war) begin, human ingenuity and technological development would increase food supply so a larger population, action could be supported
When was the theory of Malthus
1798
When was the theory of Boserup
1965
What is under population
When there are not enough people in the country to develop resources to maximum potential
What does under population lead to
Lower economic output and quality of life
What is optimum population
When the population is just at the right level to develop sources fully without putting them under unsustainable pressure
What does optimum population lead to
Maximum possible economic output
What is over population
When the population exceeds the capacity of resources available to support them
What does over population lead to
Lower economic output and quality of life
How can we avoid over population
Reducing population growth, reducing resource consumption, using technology to discover new resources
What is the use of the demographic transition model
Shows how birth and death rate have influenced the total population of a place and how it’s changed over the years
