Population Flashcards
Demography
Study of the population
Population density
Measures how closely people live, dividing the number of people in a place by a given area
Crude birth rate
Babies born in a year for every 1000 people
Crude death rate
Number of deaths in a year for every 1000 people
Rate of natural increase
Statistic formed by the subtraction of the crude death rate from the crude birth rate; rate the population is increasing by without taking into account the movement of people (ex. immmigration)
Doubling time
Found by dividing the growth rate by 70, amount of time needed for the population to double
Total fertility rate
Number of children a woman is expected to have in her lifetime
Replacement rate
TFR needed to ensure the population continues to grow, 2.1
Population momentum
Tendency for a population to grow even when TFR drops below replacement rate, a result of larger numbers of child-bearing individuals compared to dying older individuals
Population projection
Prediction about the future population based on current trends
GNI
Gross National Income, the total value of all goods and services produced in a country together with the balance of income from and payments to other countries
PPP
Purchasing Power Parity, a measurement of the number of units of a country’s currency needed to buy the same amount of goods in a country as 1 US dollar could buy
Demographic transition model
Pattern of population growth as a country develops
Megacity
City of 10 million or more people
Slums
Concentration of very poor people in a city
