The number of people per km squared.
What is the birth rate?
The births per 1000 people per year.
What is the death rate?
The deaths per 1000 people per year.
Why has world growth decreased?

What does the demographic transition model show?
The relationship between birth rates and death rates.
What happens in stage 1?
Both birth rates and death rates are high (about 35 per 1000).
What happens in stage 2?
Birth rates remain high, but death rates fall rapidly to about 20 per 1000 people.
What happens in stage 3?
Birth rates fall rapidly, to about 20 per 1000 people and death rates continue to fall slightly to about 15 per 1000 people.
What happens in stage 4?
Birth rates are low (about 12 per 1000 people). And death rates are also low (about 10 per 1000 people). These numbers fluctuate slightly.
