what is immigration ?
Immigration is the arrival of individuals into a new country
what is Emigration ?
Emigration is the departure of individuals from a country
How do you calculate net migration ?
Number of immigrans ( arrivals )
- number of emigrants ( departures )
What is the profile of a migrant?
+ young ( 20 - 40 years old )
+ half are women
+ normally young single men and the women migrate for family reunification
+ skilled workers
What are the types of migration?
permanent/temporary, legal/illegal, local/international, voluntary/forces
What means of transportation do migrants use?
Boats, auto mobiles, trains, planes
How did the evolution of transportation effect migration?
Migrants were able to travel increasingly quickly and at decreasing costs
How did people get information about countries they wanted to migrate to during the 19th century?
news paper ads ect
What are reasons people migrate temporarily?
seasonal jobs, business trips, tourism, studies, etc
What are some types of temporary migration?
student mobility (students who study abroad), snowbirds (individuals who leave the cold in the winter) and tourism (people going on vacation and business trips)
What is demographic growth?
it expresses the variation of a population over time
What does it mean when a developed country is dealing with an ageing population?
the number of young people is falling while the number of old people is rising therefore these countries cannot ensure the replacement of each generation
What is a refugee?
someone who is forced to leave their country
What are political refugees?
immigrants that are forced to leave their homes because of a war or an unstable life-threatening political situation
What is the international organization responsible for refugees?
The Office of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR)
When are refugee camps set up?
when a conflict results in the displacement of a population
what do refugee camps supply?
a place to sleep, sanitary facilities, food, and medical care
What is family reunification?
when people immigrate so they can join family members who have already settles in a new country
What is an example of family reunification?
A father who immigrates to a new country to find work. Once he is settled he begins taking steps so that his wife and kids can join him
What must one do if they want to reunify their family
?
they must obtain a legal status (citizenship or permanent residence) and they must then demonstrate that they can support the people they want to bring over (proof of financial support)
Who can a Canadian citizen sponsor for family reunification?
a spouse, parents, children, etc (essentially any relative)
What is the impact of migration flow on developing countries?
when a segment of a population leaves a country it solves the problem of over population and unemployment (less people=less people that are unemployed)
Why does migration have a positive affect on the country of origin?
because migrants normally send money to their country of origin (to family members, etc) which helps the economy of the counry
What is brain drain?
When the number of intellectual elite that are emigrating is growing
