What is population density and how is it calculated?
It’s a measurement and is calculated by dividing the number of people by area (people per sq km)
Definition of birth rate
The number of births per 1000 per year in a country
Define death rate
The number of people per 1000 who die every year
Define life expectancy
The average number of years a person is expected to live in a specific country
Define infant mortality
Number of infants that die under the age of 1 years old per 1000 live births
2 definitions of fertility rate
- average number of births per women in a country
- average number of children each women in a population will bear
What is natural increase/change
Change in the size of a population
Why is fertility declining in an MEDC
- contraception more available
- women want their income to continue (not quit their job)
- women would lose independence
- marry later in life
What affects fertility in an LEDC
- migration
- war
- clean water
- contraception
What is a young dependant?
Children under 15 (0-14) who depend on their parents. No income of their own
What is an old dependant?
People aged over 65 who depend on people who work and have an income
Define economically active
The fraction of a population that is either employed or seeking employment
Define dependency ratio
A measure showing the number of dependants (0-14 and over 65) to the total population (15-64)
