Population Flashcards
Crude birth rate (CBR)
the number of births per thousand individuals in a population per year. = (tn birth / T population ) X 1000
Crude death rate (CDR)
the number of deaths per thousand individuals in a population per year. = (Tn bith / T population) x 1000
Natural increase rate (NIR)
the rate of human growth expressed as a percentage change per year. = (CBR-CDR) / 10
Doubling time (DT)
the time in years that it takes for a population to double in size. = 70/ NIR
Total fertility rate (TFR)
the average number of children each woman has over her lifetime
Population pyramids: A wide base indicates
high birth rate
Population pyramids: A narrow base indicates
low birth rate
Population pyramids: straight or near vertical sides indicate
low death rate
Population pyramids: concave slopes characterize
high death rate
Population pyramids: bulges in the slope suggest
baby booms or high rates of immigration or in-migration
Population pyramids: slices in the slope suggest
emigration or out-migration or age-specific or sex-specific deaths
DTM stage 1 is characterised by
High BR, High DR, stable or slow population increase
DTM stage 3
BR falling slowly, DR falling slowly, Population increase slsows doe/wn
DTM stage 4
BR low, DR low, Population stable
DTM stage 5
BR low, DR low, population decreases
