Population Flashcards
What is Population geography
The study of the size, distribution, composition, migration, and growth of population
What is demography
Demography deals with the statistics of human population such as size, development, and structure of these populations
What is Population density
The number of people relative to the space they occupy
How do you calculate Population density
total population / number of areas in which they live
Define ‘ecumene’
Parts of Earth that are suitable for permanent human settlement
Define ‘nonecumene’
parts of Earth that are NOT suitable for human settlement
List AT LEAST 3 physical factors for why people live where they live (there are 6 physical factors)
-climate
-water availability/ sanitization
-soil (agriculture)
-relief (rather flat land)
-natural environment (natural harbors, Poles)
-resources
List AT LEAST 2 social factors for why people live where they live (there are 5 social factors)
-economy (level of development)
-politics (prefer stable system)
-cultural factors such as old traditions
-transport and communication
-infrastructure
What do geographers use population indicators for
to compare the characteristics of different populations
define ‘birth rate’
the number of babies born per 1000 of population per year
how do you calculate the birth rate (BR)
number of births DIVIDED BY the total population MULTIPLIED BY 1000
define ‘death rate’ a.k.a ‘mortality rate’
the number of deaths per 1000 of population per year
how do you calculate the death rate (DR)
number of deaths DIVIDED BY the total population MULTIPLIED BY 1000
define ‘natural increase’
the rate at which a country’s population is growing, excluding migration into or out of the country
how do you calculate NI (natural increase)
NI = BR - DR
define ‘life expectancy’
the average number of years a person can expect to live
define ‘infant mortality rate’
the number of infant deaths per 1000 live births OR number of babies per 1000 live births who then die in the first 12 months after birth
define ‘fertility rate’
average number of children an average woman would have if she were to live to the end of her child-bearing years
define ‘literacy level’
the percentage of the total population who can read and write
define ‘GDP per capita’
Gross Domestic Product per person
the income of a country DIVIDED BY the population of the country
define ‘percentage of urbanized population’
percentage of the total population living in towns and cities
define ‘doubling time’
the time in years it would take a country’s population to double
the greater the rate of population growth = the shorter the doubling time
