Population Flashcards
What is the study of population called
Demography or demographic studies
Why do we study population?
So Government /organisations can provide services such as water , health and education
What is it called when population increases and decrease over time
Fluctuation
What are three causes of change
Birth
Death
Migration
How do you calculate natural change
Birth rate - death rate = x
X/1000 x 100 = x%
Whats stage 1 of population cycle
High fluctuating - undeveloped, total population low, high birth rates and high death rates eg Bangladesh
What is stage 2 of the population cycle
Early expanding - start of development, population rises, death rates begin to fall, improvements in healthcare , sanitation, food supply eg mali
What is stafe 3 of the population cycle
Late expanding - developing well, population rising rapidly, high natural increase eg brazil
What is stage 4 of the population cycle
Low fluctuating- country has developed,low birth and death rates , people survive to old ages, small families eg ireland
What is stage 5 of the population cycle
Senile stage- population going into decline ,death rates slightly higher than birth rates eg Germany
What are the 6 factors of population ?
-food supply -war
-improved technology-status of women
-healthcare -education
How does food supply affect pop?
-Better food->pop increase
-Good nutrition->people live longer+ healthier lives
-lack of food->famine->pop decrease (Ireland 1845-52)
How does improved tech effect pop?
Modern farm machines..ect -> increases amount food
Modern conveniences->easier life
People live longer -> pop increases
War tech-> decrease pop
How does healthcare effect pop ?
-health improves ->death rate decreases +pop increases
-absence of healthcare -> higher death rates
How does war effect pop?
War-> death of a lot of peope
Harvesting/transporting food is affected
People die-> starvation
After war-> baby boom
How does the status of women affect pop?
Traditional -> women work at home -> have a lot of kids
Modern-> more control+ choice how they live-> decide how many kids
Less kids burn
How does education affect pop?
Less education-> pop increase
(Girls leave school early-> have kids younger-> more kids )
Longer people are in education-> less kids-> pop decrease
What is migration?
Migration is the movement of people from one place to another

A migrant is a person who leaves one place for another
