The poet describes saying goodbye to her son who is going off to war. She pins a poppy on his lapel and put’s on a brave face. She remembers about when her son was small and young, meanwhile her son is excited to leave for war. She follows a dove to the church, where she leans against the war memorial there, longing for the sound of her son’s laughter
