pop+env Flashcards
How does climate (physical env) affect the population?
Climate type affects the global distribution of the population as it’s difficult to grow crops there (e.g. Sahara Desert) whereas in temperate climates its easier to produce food and therefore there’s a high pop density there
Climate change also affects the population distribution as sea levels rise causing people on islands and coasts to move out, and can also affect the nutrition levels of ppl living there
How do soils (physical env) affect population?
Soil fertility can affect the amount and type of food that an area contains
cities near volcanoes (e.g. Naples) have very fertile soils which can lead to ahigh population density
Bangladesh exists on a floodplain which allows large-scale agriculture to occur due to the fertile soils which increases its population
soil erosion can also lead to a declining population due to people migrating to areas with fertile soil
How can resource distribution (physical env) affect the population
Population growth and distribution are linked to the availability of freshwater and other resources (desert mainly have low pop due to the lack of water)
Lack of safe water can lead to many health problems and even death which would lessen the population of an area
Large availability of food and fuel (e.g. TRF) can support large populations
energy and mineral resources can lead to local concentrations of people
How did development processes affect the population change? (Neolithic revolution)
The neolithic revolution occurred 12,000 years ago, and it was the period where the majority of hunter-gatherer communities shifted to agriculture. As it was more reliable, birth and fertility rates increased. It could also feed denser populations so more people survived leading to baby blooms and a higher population
How did development processes affect the population change? (Industrial revolution)
The industrial revolution occurred between 1750s and 1850s, and led to an increased usage of machines and factories in developed countries. It also led to an increased food production and the increased income led to the people having better diets. Between those times, the UK’s population more than doubled and more people were moving to cities as farming was less labour-intensive
How did development processes affect the population change? (Green revolution)
The green revolution occurred during the 1950s and 60s and led to the advancement of agricultural techniques such as irrigation which allowed crop yields to increase and this led to the increase of the population due to a lot more food being created estimated 1 billion able to be fed due to it
