Poor Socialisation Flashcards
1
Q
What does Murray argue?
A
- the decline in the effectiveness of the family to teach core values and self control has resulted in the creation of the underclass
2
Q
What traits include the underclass
A
- welfare dependency
- lack of desire to do paid work
- dependency on drugs and alcohol
- rise in illegitimate children raised without a male role model bc women can now live off benefits rather than having to get married to have children. This also means that men no longer have to take responsibility for supporting their families, so they no longer need to work.
3
Q
What is the underclass a result of?
A
- generous welfare provisions made by the state
4
Q
What does absent fathers mean for young boys?
A
boys lack paternal discipline and appropriate male role models. As a result, young males turn to other, delinquent role models on the street to gain status through crime rather than supporting their families through a steady job.
5
Q
What is the solution to this?
A
- to abolish the welfare system and make fathers responsible for their family which will prevent young boys mixed up in crime

A
Marxists would argue that the underclass is not a choice and is the result of the uniquel distribution of wealth in society as highlighted by marxists
