Polymers Flashcards
How are polymers made?
Most plastics are formed from crude oil. After a long process of chemical reaction, a large amount of molecules called monomers are created and combined into strands called polymers (process of refining).
What are some examples of biodegradable polymers?
Starch based plastics
Protein based plastics
Cellulose based plastics
What are some properties of polymers?
Coloured - can be produced into any colour Self finishing Can be easily shaped Formed easily Cost is reasonable Versatile working properties Can be easily cleaned Non toxic
What are thermoforming polymers?
These plastics can be re-heated and therefor shaped in various ways. CAN BE RECYCLED
What are thermosetting polymers?
These plastics can be only be heated once. THEY CANNOT BE RECYCLED

Able to shift and can therefor be remoulded
Name all the thermoforming polymers?
Acrylic (PMMA) - easy one
Polypropylene (PP) -
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) - easy one piping
High impact polystyrene (HIPS) - body part
High density polythene (HDPE) - High definition physical education
Polythene Terephthate (PET) - animal / bottles
Name all the thermosetting polymers
Urea Formaldehyde (UF) - UFO
Polyester Resin - just the remember the 2 resins
Phenol Formaldehyde (PF) - Fenol the vegetable
Melamine Formaldehyde (MF) -
Epoxy Resin - resin 2
Name the polymer Additives
Plasticisers - makes plastics soft and flexible
Pigments - changes colour
Stabilisers - withstands UV light damage
Fillers - increase the bulk of the plastic / improve its impact resistance
What are stock forms?
Stock form is a form of a material that makes it easier to make, transport, trade and buy.
Give some examples of stock forms
