Polymers Flashcards
1
Q
How are polymers made?
A
By joining together thousands of small, reactive molecules called monomers
2
Q
What is polymerisation?
A
The combination of monomers to make a polymer
3
Q
Properties of thermoplastics.
A
- Soften easily
- Can be remoulded into new shapes
4
Q
Properties of thermosetting plastics.
A
- Do not soften
- If heated a lot, break down and char
- Hard and rigid
5
Q
What is condensation polymerisation?
A
In condensation polymerisation, a small molecule is formed as a by-product each time a bond is formed between two monomers. This small molecule is often water.
E.g. Nylon
6
Q
Name 3 polymers and their uses.
A
- Poly(ethene) used for plastic bags and bottles
- Poly(propene) used for crates and ropes
- Poly(chloroethene) used for water pipes and insulation on electricity cables
7
Q
What are the 2 different types of polyethene?
A
- Low density (weaker and lower BP)
- High density
