What is polymerisation?

A

Joining together lots of small Alkene molecules (monomers) to form a very large molecules - these long-chain molecules are called polymers.

What are the advantages of polymers? Give 3 examples…

A

Light, stretchable polymers such as low density poly(ethene) are used to make plastic bags. Elastic polymer fibres are used to make super-stretchy LYCRA rc fibre for tights.
Dental polymers are used in resin tooth fillings. Polymers hydrogel wound dressings keep wounds moist.

What are the disadvantages of polymers? Give an example…

A

Most polymers aren’t biodegradable which means they aren’t broken down by microorganisms, so they don’t rot.
