Polymers Flashcards
1
Q
What is polymerisation?
A
Joining together lots of small Alkene molecules (monomers) to form a very large molecules - these long-chain molecules are called polymers.
2
Q
What are the advantages of polymers? Give 3 examples…
A
Light, stretchable polymers such as low density poly(ethene) are used to make plastic bags. Elastic polymer fibres are used to make super-stretchy LYCRA rc fibre for tights.
Dental polymers are used in resin tooth fillings. Polymers hydrogel wound dressings keep wounds moist.
3
Q
What are the disadvantages of polymers? Give an example…
A
Most polymers aren’t biodegradable which means they aren’t broken down by microorganisms, so they don’t rot.
