Polymers Flashcards
LDPE
Properties
Light-weight, low density, low rigidity, low hardness and toughness
Uses
Disposable plastic bags, cling wrap
Polyvinylchloride
Properties
Cl side groups causes chain stiffening
Polar C-Cl bonds have strong intermolecular forces, hence it is a hard inflexible polymer
The rigidity of PVC can be adjusted by adding non-volatile plasticisers
Uses
Pipes/guttering/credit cards: since it is hard, brittle/non-flexibe and water resistant
Electrical coating: since it is a hard, brittle/non-flexible and an electrical insulator
Polystyrene
Properties
Rigid, hard, lightweight, high crystallinity
Uses
Insulated food packaging: expanded PS is moderately resistant to chemical attack and is a good heat insulator
Car battery cases: since it is an electrical insulator
Polytetrafluoroethylene
Properties
Non-stick, heat and chemical resistant, strong and durable (not as much as PVC), low friction (TEFLONS) and flame-resistant
Uses
Non-stick such as on frying pan surfaces
Seals, such as Teflon ‘O’ rings
Polyethylene terephthalate
Properties
High strength, rigidity and hardness, low moisture absorption and friction, resistance against acids (not bases)
Uses
Bottles
Containers
Nylon-6,6
Properties
Can be moulded or drawn into fibres and used to make plastic
Thermoplastic, strong, elastic, waterproof, highly resistant to attach by insect or fungi
Uses
Clothing, fishing lines
