Polymers Flashcards
Polymers
Plastics from crude oil
Two categories of polymers
Thermoforming or Thermosetting
Thermoforming
Have a “plastic memory” - goes back to original shape when heated
Melt at low temperatures
Recyclable
Examples of thermoforming Plastics
ABS
HDPE
nylon
PMMA (Acrylic)
UPVC
PP
PVC
ThermoSetting plastics
Rigid Links
Cannot be reformed due to chemical reactions
Can take high temperatures
Cannot be softened when heated
Thermoforming Setting plastics examples
Polyester resin
Epoxy resin
Urea formaldehyde
Melamine formaldehyde
Elastomers
Any rubbery material
Examples of elastomers
Neoprene, silicone, buradiene, natural rubber
Polymers Enhancement:
Something that is added to polymers stock form that enhances the product to improve performance or decrease cost
Polymer enhancement examples
Fire retardants, bulkers, colourings, plasticiser, biodegradable
Plastic Recycling
Polymer identification symbols to identify what plastic it is
What is a biodegradable polymer
Bio polymers can be designed to degrade in a shorter time than usual
How is polymer biodegraded
Light, oxygen or water
Natural bio-polymer
Made from natural materials such as cellulose, starch and polysaccharide
Synthetic bio polymer
Made from renewable resources but chemically engineered to break down quicker
