11
Q

polypeptide

A

With 20 different amino acids, that can be arranged in any order to make a polypeptide of up to thousands of amino acids long, their potential for variety is almost infinite.

12
Q

Amino acids structure

A

·Amino acids are optically active, or chiral. For some reason, nature chose to use only the left handversion of the amino acids.

13
Q

natural polypeptides

A

·The fact that only one of the two isomers is used leads to natural polypeptides forming helical structures. The helical conformations increase the stability of the polypeptides and the helix is stabilized by hydrogen bonding between amine and carbonyl groups of the same polypeptide chain.

·Such helical structures are what nature uses to mould enzymes into certain shapes so that they can work their catalytic magic.
