Polymer Flashcards
What are the two types of plastic?
Thermoforming and Thermosetting
What are most plastic made from ?
Crude oil
Name a thermosetting polymer?
Urea Formaldehyde (UF)
Epoxy Resin
Melamine Formaldehyde
Phenol Formaldehyde (PF)
Polyester Resin
Name a thermoforming plastic?
High-Impact Poleystyrene (HIPS)
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
High-Density Polythene (HDPE)
Polythylene Terephthate (PET)
Acrylic (PMMA)
Polypropylene (PP)
What are thermoforming polymer?
Plastics that can be re-heated which can be reshaped.
What are thermosetting polymer?
A plastic that cannot be reheated or reshaped.
Which type of polymer can get recycled?
Thermoforming
Which type of polymer can’t be reshaped or remoulded?
Thermosetting.
Which type of polymer is chemical resistant?
Thermoforming.
Which type of polymer is more resistant to high temperatures?
Thermosetting
What do Plasticisers do?
They are soft and flexible (often PVC).
What do Pigments do?
Changes colour.
What do Stabilisers do?
To withstand UV light damage (outdoor products).
What do Fillers do?
Increase the bulk, improve its impact resistance.
What are Stock Forms?
The standard shapes and sizes in which a material is available.
