Polygraph tests Flashcards
What does it mean if someone is a person of interest in a criminal investigation?
refers to someone in whom the police are “interested”, either because the person is cooperating with the investigation, may have information that would assist the investigation, or possesses certain characteristics that merit further attention.
Who typically administers a polygraph test to a person of interest.
A polygraph examiner.
Heart rate
The number of heartbeats unit per time
Blood pressure
the force of your blood pushing against the walls of your arteries.
respiration rate
the number of breaths you take per minute
skin conductivity
he phenomenon that the skin momentarily becomes a better conductor of electricity when either external or internal stimuli occur that are physiologically arousing.
baseline measurment
piece of data that has been taken before any action has been applied to such data.
how do you create a baseline in a polygraph
several irrelevant questions interspersed
Describe how a polygraph test can indicate a person may be lying.
Polygraphs measure physiological arousal factors, including heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, perspiration, and skin conductivity. The theory of the lie detector test is that these physiological responses will be different when the subject is truthful versus when the subject lies.
Explain how each of the vital signs used in a polygraph test can indicate someone may be lying.
lying often causes an increase in physiological arousal. also change in blood pressure and heart rate
Explain the relationship between respiration rate and heart rate.
The more the heart rates the more breathing occurs
I can analyze a polygraph chart to determine whether a person of interest lied.
