Women and Economics

A

Written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
Female dependency on the male. Humans are the only animal species in which this is the case. Females have a lesser economic status than men, making them slaves to men that will always see them as second class.
Peasant and savage women aren’t economically independent despite working outside of their homes. Their labor is property of another, which extends to poor, working class, and/or immigrant women’s work in America today. Being thought of separately by men, sex distinction, subordinates women, placing them in a lower class.
Women’s house work is considered their more valued form of labor due to expectation.

What the Social Classes Owe Each Other

A

Written by William Graham Sumner
Sumner believes that nature is categorized as a struggle, people have to deal with certain ills.
However nature can be thought of as desiring or something else.
Distinction of ills are significant in order to know which ones can and cannot be controlled, knowing what can be fixed.
The social classes owe each other duties by reference to the economic effects that will be produced on the classes and society. Sumner believes individuals who can’t support themselves or contribute to society through labor and capital shouldn’t share in the states political power.
He also believes poor man is an elastic term and anyone can change that about themselves if they work toward a better future.
Social structure is based on contract which is based on sufficient reason according to sumner and status is the least important social structure.
He also believes freedom is being responsible for oneself and family or else you are a burden to others.

Address at the Seneca Falls Convention(1848)

A

Written by Elizabeth Cady Stanton
This address isn’t for luxury but to retain all rights and have the governed acknowledged. Her tone was very civil and orderly.
Equality and rights aren’t the same thing, they are separate and both deal with the well being of people. Stanton wishes their separate importance would be acknowledged.
She wants to get the women right to vote, because they deserve their right to equality with mindless men no better than them.
The education society is a society of education women made for young men, which Stanton is against because they made a society for the same men that claim they’re better than women.
She believes no true dignity or independence exists where there is subordination to another’s will and there is no happiness without freedom.
Stanton believes women’s rights will bring society a great and virtuous nation, there are things women can do that men can’t like be more emotional and sympathetic to those oppressed.

Q

What were the two major compromises and why were both compromises made in Philadelphia necessary to enable the ratification of the constitution? Why did the founding fathers think the constitution was needed?

A

1- Both states and people would be represented in congress
The House of Representatives: each state would be apportioned a certain number of representatives based on the size of its population.
The Senate: each state, big or small would have two votes apiece
2- the profound and bitter conflict about slavery
Southern slave holders feared that if the congress solely represented people rather than states, they might ultimately become a minority and slavery would be abolished. The 3/5 compromise.

The framers of the constitution wanted a national government with vast new powers and speaking on behalf of the American people as a whole. Hence the phrase “We the people of the United States”. The federalists were the proponents. Madison, John Jay, Alexander Hamilton.
-continental congress depended on the states while the constitution drew its authority directly from the people, the consent of the people.

Madison is in favor of representative democracy(republic) over pure democracy, he doesn’t believe a pure democracy could cure the mischiefs of faction.
Increasing the republic would help control the effects of faction.

Democracy in America

A

Written by Alexis de Tocqueville
Social state is considered the prime cause of most laws, customs, and ideas which control nation behavior.
Role of the laws of inheritance caused the final advance of equality.
Tocqueville believes equality in America exists through inheritance, inheriting fortune, which isn’t real equality such as same freedom and opportunities for all.
Freedom can get out of hand and start tyranny.
It’s harder to abolish slavery in the modern world than in the ancient one.
Chattel slavery(the slave and master have different origin).
Tocqueville believed prejudice still had to end after slavery did.
A persons custom and views are stronger than law.
Racism is stronger in slavery abolished states because their freedom is frowned upon and they have no land of their own.
Education girls get in free society is important.
A democratic education is needed to protect women against dangers in institutions and mores of democracy, it would make it more peaceful and orderly.
Social inequality of men and women exists due to views on nature creating both genders with physical and moral differences.
Imposing the same duties and rights on both genders would degrade both sexes.
Tocqueville focuses on inequality, not becoming equal.

Q

Commonwealth Club Address(1932)(Yes)

A

Written by Franklin D. Roosevelt
According to Roosevelt, the “great political duel” between Hamilton and Jefferson is the tension between individual freedom and the need for government. The debate over the power of government over the economy. Out of that duel came the two parties: republican and democratic.

2- According to Roosevelt, the frontier is significant because it offers opportunities, new dreams.
The frontier was gone because of the advantages of the industrial revolution. The industrial revolution annihilated distance by steam power and electricity but also “released everyone from the drudgery of heaviest manual toil. The industrial revolution made labor irrelevant by advancing an “economic machine.”

3- According to Roosevelt, the industrial revolution revolutionized the United States. It brought infrastructure, shortened distances: transportation, power, and raised the standard of living.
The new demand placed that the industrial revolution placed upon government is to aid in the consummation of the new dream. Now government has to help make the dream real.

4- According to Roosevelt, the greatest threat to economic freedom of the individual to earn a living is the growing corporation. The corporation had become too big, uncontrolled and an irresponsible unit of power in the state.
The government must develop an economic declaration of rights, an economic constitutional order.

5- Jefferson believed in the basic goodness of man and the evil of institution. To him, government is a mean to an end, not an end in itself: the utilitarian view.
Hamilton fundamentally believed that the safety of the republic lay in the autocratic strength of its government.
Roosevelt drew from both: he believed that government must intervene, not to destroy individualism, but to protect it.

6- Roosevelt’s argument for higher wages: the powerful corporations (economic units) “cannot exist unless prosperity is uniform , that is, unless purchasing power is well distributed throughout every group in the nation. That is why even the most selfish corporation for its own interest would be glad to see wages restored and unemployment ended …….”
This analysis reveals that consumption drives the economy: consumer spending accounts for 70% of our economy.

7- Roosevelt’s “declaration of rights, an economic constitutional order” resembles the bill of rights and constitution in that it is extended to all.
These rights are different from the constitution in the fact that they can be changed easily due to growing and changing social order. They are not subjected to the te adios amendment process.

8- Roosevelt is not prepared to condemn the system that produced the “princes of property” because he is part of the system. He states that it has created many good men. He blames the men themselves.
Marx would disagree with Roosevelt’s the idea of protecting individualism, capitalism itself. But he would agree with his idea that “the responsible heads of finance and industry instead of acting each for himself, must work together to achieve the common end.”

9- Roosevelt thinks that the lone wolf disregards public good, he is an unethical competitor and a reckless promoter. Similarly, Madison believes that factions (special interest groups) disregard public welfare.
They both believe that government should intervene and assume the role of protecting the public at large.
