pollution water + air Flashcards
fossil fuel examples
Gasoline (part of Petroleum) (C8H18)
Natural Gas (CH4)
Coal
how is fossil fuel formed
When dead material does not decompose correctly because of lack of oxygen and under layers of soil and or water
combustion
Burning of organic material. It produces carbon dioxide.
Organic material + O2 —-> ^H + CO2 + H2O
Ex: Burning of natural gas
CH4 + O2 —-> ^H + CO2 + H2O
why is fossil fuel such a problem
large increase of carbon dioxide in the air which traps the hot air
climate change
Because of carbon dioxide in the air:
Increase in global temperature (Global
Increase in severe storms
Change in climate
All impacting organisms niche
what’s the ozone layer
Layer in stratosphere that limits/traps the amount of sun rays (UV rays)
O3
what happened to ozone layer
CFC’s (chlorofluorocarbons) deplete the ozone layer making it thinner and creating a hole
Refrigerators, air conditioners, and aerosol cans (like hair spray) had CFC
CFC’s have been banned since 1987
Because of the ban on CFC, ozone layer is healing itself
water ecosystems
Fresh water
Salt water: oceans and marine
Estuaries: areas between salt and fresh water
Ground water
Heat capacity
Ability to keep heat in
Water: high heat capacity. Needs a lot of energy to heat up but also takes long time to cool (retains its heat)
Metal: low heat capacity. Heats and cools quicky
whats dissolved oxygen
Oxygen dissolved in the water
Fish need it for respiration. Us their gills
how does oxygen get into the water
Plants perform photosynthesis
Water flowing
what are the D.O. units
Parts per million (ppm)
mg/L
Fresh water range is 10-15ppm
Salt water range is 8-11ppm
Whats happens to D.O with higher water temps in summer?
Water temperatures are increasing because of global warming and factories dumping warmer waters.
Less can dissolve which impacts amount of oxygen for fish
How is acid rain formed
Co2 and h2o
What are the dissolved oxygen levels
