Pollution Review Flashcards
What type of resources are the following: petroleum coal nuclear (uranium) oil
NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES!!!
What type of resources are the following: biomass energy hydropower geothermal power wind solar
RENEWABLE RESOURCES!!!
What is hydroelectric energy?
Hydroelectric energy is energy made from water turbines (moving water) that turns into electric energy.
What are some problems with solar energy?
Solar energy can be VERY expensive. Also, when the sun is not out, energy is scarce. A smaller problem is simply the look of them.
Definition of petroleum energy.
the burning of a liquid fossil fuel
Definition of hydropower.
the gravitational and kinetic potential of water
Definition of wind energy.
movement of air particles
Definition of geothermal energy.
the thermal energy of Earth’s interior
Definition of natural gas energy.
the burning of gaseous fossil fuel
Definition of nuclear energy.
radioactive uranium and thorium
Definition of solar energy.
the sun
Definition of biofuels.
the burning of plants
Definition of algae farms.
the byproducts of microorganisms
Definition of coal energy.
the burning of a solid fossil fuel
The three pillars include:
Economic Aspect
Social Aspect
Environmental Aspect
Explain what each of these mean.
Economic- Is this making/losing money?
Social- How does this affect people?
Environmental- Does this harm, effect, or protect the environment?
What will happen as the population continues to increase?
Fossil fuels will run out/low, land available will be a problem, food availability, and the price of minerals.
Why is carbon dioxide in the atmosphere a concern?
It heats up the planet, and will dry out rain forests, and melt glaciers. This will cause the rise of sea levels.
DDT?
DDT is a chemical people used that killed many species, and Rachel Carson was one of the few that stopped the production. DDT was harming humans, because of fertility/other organ problems.
