Pollution Flashcards
Define Pollution
Pollution is the contamination of land, water or air by the discharge of harmful substances.
Name Types of Pollution
Based on the location of the affected area:
Land
Air
Water
Or types of pollution:
Solid waste
Noise
Light
Define Land Pollution
Any type of solid, liquid or gaseous discharge released by humans that directly affect the land around them.
Solid wastes
These are non biodegradable pollutants and
include
plastic bottles,
glass,
Styrofoam and
metals
Name non-biodegradable
These are non biodegradable pollutants and include
plastic bottles,
glass,
Styrofoam and
metals
What can solid waste lead to
Effect: block water ways, cause flooding which can lead to
disease,
crop loss and
increase in pests.
Name a few ways to control solid waste
Control: Reduce production of non biodegradable products, replace with biodegradable options.
Dispose responsibly
Reuse
Recycle
List Non-biodegradable waste
From households and industry:
Lead
Mercury
Plastic particles
Cyanide
Effects of Non Biodegradable waste
Can accumulate on land and then enter air or water where they can poison living things
Control
Removal of toxins before disposal.
Replace with non-toxic alternatives
Insecticides and herbicides
These are used in agriculture and include pesticides such as DDT
Eutrophication
The enrichment of an ecosystem with chemical nutrients, typically compounds containing nitrogen, phosphorus, or both
Eutrophication process in 6 stages
Addition of Nitrates
Growth of Plants
Death of Plants
Lack of Oxygen
Suffocation
