AMA lobby government examples
- 16th July 2022
Government cut telehealth items when Covid was on the rise again
AMA Vice President Dr Chris May said “it was not possible to properly consult and prescribe patients asking for antiviral medication to combat COVID-19 in under 20 minutes.”
After this, the government said they would reinstate the item - AMA members raised concerns around ongoing issues with My Health Record such as the consumer controlled nature makes it a likely incomplete information source.
After this the Aus Gov agreed not to pursue this proposal
ACF lobby government examples
- ACF provided bipartisan support to politicians, this lead to Australia’s Climate Change Bill
The first legislative requirement regarding greenhouse gas emission reduction targets passed in Australia and the country’s first climate change related legislation to be passed in over a decade - July of 2021
Woodside planned to sink a structure that contained toxins, plastic and metal into a sensitive marine environement
By bringing this to light, the 83 metre structure would no longer be dropped into the reef as of September 2021
Conclusion
Both ACF and AMA are examples of how pressure groups are significant participants in Australia’s political system. By lobbying the government, they are able to express their concerns and the issues they are passionate about. In turn, comes the opportunity to influence government-decisions, therefore changing Australia’s political system step-by-step to advocate their beliefs.
