Rome Treaty 1972/3
When UK joined the ECC.
Single European Act 1985/7
This created the single European market and prompt a greater role in social policy. Unamity voting changed to QMV on single market issue.
Maastricht Treaty 1991/3
This created the EU and set a timetable for economic and monetary policy. increased intergovernmental co-operation in foreign and security policy.
Amsterdam Treaty 1997/9
established an ‘area of freedom, security’
Nice Treaty 2001/3
this treaty created security and defence policy. Introduced institutional reforms.
Lisbon Treaty 2007/9
meant more institutional reforms as France and the Netherlands the EU constitution treaty.
Sovreign debt 2009
Greece / Ireland / Spain were bailed out of bankruptcy using the EU fund and were forced to impose austerity policy.
What are the aims of the EU?

What is the Court of Justice of the European Union?

- upholds EU law and ensures it is applied
- can strike down domestic law that the EU overrides.
