What are the 3 levels of government
Local, state and federal
What does the local government care for
Sports grounds, rubbish, pet registration, planning permits
What does the state government look after
Hospitals, schools, road laws, police
What does the federal government look after
Defence, marriage and currency
What is the upper house and how many seats do they have
The upper house is the senate and has 76 seats, the house is red and the presiding officer is president
What is the Lower house and how many seats do they have?
Also what colour is the house
The lower house is made up of the House of Representatives, he colour of the house Is green and has 150 seats
Who can vote?
Australian residents over the age of 18
What do the electorates consist of?
80-90,000 people, 150 electorates, around the same amount of people in each electorate
What is a double majority
Over 50% of states must have over 50% of voters
What is a government
A government is a system of political rule over a society
What is the constitution
Set of rules that govern a nation
What is a representative democracy
They vote for people who represent our electorate at federal level
What is preferential voting
Preferential voting is voting in order of preference, party with least votes are eliminated, votes reassigned, until majority is achieved
What is a referendum
Changes to the constitution voted on by electorates, must have double majority to pass
What are back benchers
Members of parliament, no special responsibility
