What is politics
Decisions about how people live and interact together in society. This often includes the administration and management of state affairs (e.g., taxation, providing healthcare, protecting rights, creating laws, etc.)
What are geopolitics
the decision making of government in terms of the geography of the area, on a national and international scale. This often includes interactions between and among groups of countries. (e.g., Determining borders between countries, resolving conflict, creating trade agreements, controlling access to sea and air routes)
What is nation-state
the concept of an independent nation ruled by a government that controls events within clearly marked boundaries
What is sovereignty
refers to the legal concept that the authority of a state is not subject to legal control by another state
What is ideology
refers to a set of ideas and beliefs that form a basis for a nation’s political and economic systems and its social goals
What is democracy
form of government in which citizens choose their leaders in open and fair elections. Also called “rule of the many”.
What are some features of democracy
Decision making is based on the rule of the majority of the citizens.
It is the responsibility of the government to represent the will of the people.
There are guarantees in law for the freedoms of expression, assembly, religion and the press.
What is an authoritarian
a form of government that limits the freedoms of its citizens, demands strict obedience to government authority, and does not allow criticism of its policies
What is communism
a form of government in which ownership of most goods is held by the state, which generally has some form of authoritarian government
What are some features of communism
Has state-controlled education and healthcare.
Usually has secret police.
Public criticism of the government is not permitted.
Few individual rights.
Individualism is exchanged for the collective, where everyone shares services and experiences in common. The ruling person(s) is often the exception.
What would determining borders between countries, resolving conflict, creating trade agreements, controlling access to sea and air routes, all be a part of?
