Capitalism
An economic and political system in which a country’s trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.
Communism
A political theory advocating class war and leading to a society in which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs.
Socialism
- term coined by Robert Owen
- government takes active role in economy
- means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community
Democracy
- the people take part in governing.
* means rule of the people
Fascism
- led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing any opposition
- emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism
- totalitarian structure
Depotism
The exercise of absolute power, especially in a cruel and oppressive way.
Marxism
The political and economic theories of Karl Marx, later developed by followers to form the theory and basis for communism.
Nationalism
Patriotic feeling, principles, or efforts. In the extreme form, marketed by a feeling of superiority toward other countries.
Oligarchy
A small group of people having control of a country, organization, or institution.
Sovereignty
Supreme power or authority.
Conservatism
Commitment to traditional values and ideas. Caution towards change or innovation.
Libertarianism
Advocating only minimal state intervention in citizens lives.
Republicanism
Support for the republican system of government.
Monarchy
A form of government with a monarch at the head.
Syndicalism
A movement or transferring the ownership and control my the means of production and distribution to workers unions.
