-based on characteristics of the ruler
-seen in authoritarian and totalitarian societies
define legal-rational authority
-based on the status of the office within a constitutional structure, no need to prove anything

- you have to achieve the outcome you intend to have your power recognized.
-if you didn’t mean to achieve it then it isn’t actually power

1. someone so something they wouldn’t otherwise do (some power)
2. prevent them from even addressing the issue (More power)
3. influencing their wants and desires (the most power)
what are the examples for the 3 Faces of power
- the whole class has an assignment, if you dont do it you will get bad marks
- giving someone options but only choosing 20 people to choose
- the person in control gives their choices and the people just choose from those
Define the view of Socialism on power

- those in power determine what is legal and illegal and also what is normal and abnormal
