Old labour definition?
• Refers to the traditional Labour Party policies such as: Nationalisation, redistribution of income and wealth and a greatly extended public sector. Many of these policies were scrapped or altered by New labour
One nation conservatism definition?
• A belief that society should be allowed to develop in an organic way rather than being engineered
• It argues that all members of society have obligations towards one another and places heavy influence on the key idea of paternalism
Who are Momentum?
• Momentum are a prominent Labour Party faction, they are considered a “far left” group who bare more political similarities with old labour as opposed to new labour
• The group were and still likely are loyal Corbynists and have faced struggle with Starmer’s Labour party and some of their policies and political stances
What is the Third way?
• The Third way is a political ideology adopted by Tony Blair’s Labour Party in the run up to the ‘97 general election
• It was taken on by Blair after he read about it and decided it was the only way in which the Labour Party would face any National succes
• The third way is not meant to be necessarily “right” nor “left” but a newer, third option meant to define the future of British politics
What is Confidence and supply?
• A confidence and supply agreement is typically required in order for a minority government to be able to govern.
What is short money?
• Short Money is the common name given to the financial assistance for opposition parties in the HoC, to help them with costs
What is a multiparty system?
• A political system where more than two meaningfully- distinct parties regularly run for office and win elections
• More common in nations that function using the Pr voting system
What are orange book liberals?
• Orange book liberals are a faction within the Lib Dem party whose major beliefs on the economy and personal liberties and freedoms can be found in the 2004 book- The orange book
• Three contributors the book have gone on to be leaders of the Lib Dem’s- Nick Clegg, Vince Cable and the acting head, Ed Davey
What is the ERG?
• The European research group is a research group largely made up of Eurosceptic conservative MPs.
•They believe the UK should be as separate from Europe as possible due to their dislike of the euro and the EU’s trade rules
What is a mandate?
• A mandate is the authority to carry out policies, regarded as being given by the electorate to the winning party or politician
What are culture wars?
• “Culture Wars” are cultural conflicts between different social groups over deeply held beliefs , values and traditions.
