Differences pull people in different directions

15th amendment
Forbade states from denying right to vote because of
1 race
2 color
3 or previous condition of servitude
19th amendment
Gave women right to vote
26th amendment
Extended the vote to citizens 18 and older
Forms of political participation
1) protests (w/o violence or destruction)
Sometimes ppl listen but not always
2) work for a candidate or party
3) contribute financially to a candidate
4) influence others by writing letters to elected officials
5) increased use of Internet, candidates web sites
Reinforcing cleavages
Divisions within society that reinforce each other, making groups more similar
Ex person who is a black teacher= two groups of liberal people
Political socialization
Process by which we develop our political attitudes, values, or beliefs.
Voter turnout
The proportion of the voting- age public that votes, sometimes defined as the number of registered voters that vote
Voter registration
Requires voters to take an extra step filing out a form at county courthouse when renewing a drivers liscense
Some ppl don’t know it’s required
Motor voter act
Allows ppl to register to vote while applying for or renewing a drivers license
Didn’t increase voter turnout
Public opinion
The distribution of individual preferences or evaluations of a given issue, candidate, or institution within a specific population
How are public opinion polls made/given? And effects?
Close ended questions, ask a wide variety of people with many different factors which influence their behaviors
Shows wide variety of people
Political culture
Widely shared beliefs, values, and norms about how citizens relate to government and to one another, can discover a nations political culture based on what people believe, say, and how they behave
