Political authorities in Jesus death Flashcards
Evidence of Pilate’s sympathy
Pilate states in 19:4 and 19:6 that “I find no charge against this man”
How do the Jews pressure Pilate?
19:12, “if you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar!”
Pilate was worried about his position as Procurator, and wanted to preserve Roman rule as releasing Jesus may have caused a riot.
Why did the appeal to Pilate particularly?
The Sanhedrin, though they had the power to degree a crucifixion, they did not have the to execute it, whilst Pilate did
Henry quote
“Pilate had to satisfy the bloodlust of the crowd”
Hall-Harris quote
“Pilate failed to understand the depth of hatred which the authorities had for Jesus, or the lengths to which they were willing to go to see him killed”
