What is a Supranational Organization?
An alliance/agreement between 3 or more countries to achieve a common goal.
What is the UN?
Stands for United Nations. An alliance between most global countries with the goal to provide humanitarian relief and economic growth through trade. It has 5 permanent members in the U.S., Britain, Russia, China, and France, as well as 10 rotating members. There must be a unanimous vote in order to send troops to end conflict.
What is NATO?
Stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It’s a military alliance between the U.S. and many European countries such as Great Britain, France, Italy, Greece, and more. It was developed after WWII, and members promise to protect each other if they are attacked.
What is EU?
Stands for European Union. It’s an economic alliance between many European countries including Australia, France, Germany, Spain, and more. Most countries made the decision to change their national currency to the Euro in order to make trading between countries easier.
What Was The Brexit?
A combination of the words British and Exit. Refers to Britain’s exit from the EU in 2016, as they wanted to regain control of their own decisions, such as immigration control.
What is OPEC?
Stands for Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. Is made up of 15 countries including Iran, Nigeria, and Venezuela. Controls 40% of the world’s oil.
What is USMCA?
Stands for United States - Mexico - Canada. Is a trading alliance between these three countries. Made to replace NAFTA in 2020. Its purpose is to create more fair trade in North America and create economic growth.
What is a Democracy?
A government ruled by the people.
ex. United States, Australia, Canada.
What is a Direct Democracy?
When decisions are made by the people rather than elected representatives.
What is a Dictatorship?
When a country is ruled by a high position of power, usually taken by force (ex. Hitler).
What is a Monarchy?
When a country is ruled by a monarch (King/Queen)
What is an Absolute Monarchy?
When only one monarch rules.
What is a Republic?
When people elect their leaders.
What is a Theocracy?
A system of government where priests rule and religion plays a big part.
What is Totalitarianism?
A form of government that tries to take total control over its citizens (dictatorship)
