WW1- Carrie Chapman Catt insisted women would support war effort is suffrafge was introduced

CUWS- militant members hunger strike and vote illegaly- attention
HOWEVER the actions of militant women such as Alice Paul alienated many women, and made the cause undesirable

Extension of the movement- the decisions of individual states to give women the vote put pressure on the federal government to do the same nationally. by 1918 women were allowed to vote in national elections in 20 states

But also symbol of US democracy as fighting for democracy
confirmation that women were free and equal citizens

They still had to conform to the male dominated society and vote how their husbands favoured

NWSA became League of Women Voters- attrracted 10% of NWSA membership

poor turnout - 1923 Chicago elections non voters women outnumbered men 2:1

not allowed to participate in politics

divided on how to use vote- those who wanted to campaign on women’s issues eg Jane Addams or turn women into equal citizens and participants (carrie chapman Catt)
