What is a Catch all party?
A party that aims to catch the current popularities of a cause.
Eg: UKIP
Name 3 functions of a political parties ?
Representation. Policy Formulation. Recruitment of Leaders. Organisation of government. Participation.
What is a Pragmatic party ?
Have long term ideological goals.
What does a pragmatic party do to public opinion?
Shape it.
How do party leaders have power inside a party?
They dominate the party as they have the ability to give out positions in government of the shadow cabinet.
How does the Parliamentary party dominate the party as a whole.
MPs are more independent now.
Example of Parliamentary party power.
Removal of leaders, such as Thatcher.
How to Party backers have power.
They fund the party so can control some policy.
How does Labour elect their leaders.
AV, with the parliamentary party, members, and Unions having one third of the vote each.
How does the Conservative party nominate candidates to be leaders.
Need a nomination of 2 MPs if there is a nomination.
15% of MPs need to have a vote of no confidence letter with the 1922 committee if there is no vacancy.
