Clinical features

A

Most infections are asymptomatic (95%)

  • or have flu-like symptoms.

The paralytic stage is an LMN lesion (flaccid paralysis) which may include:

  • spinal polio affecting lower limbs and/or bulbar polio
  • ± respiratory failure.

No sensory loss.

Management

A

Refer symptomatic paralytic patients to hospital.

Childhood immunisation vital.
