Caused by
A
a specific spinal cord anterior horn cell enterovirus (picornovirus).

Clinical features
A
Most infections are asymptomatic (95%)
- or have flu-like symptoms.
The paralytic stage is an LMN lesion (flaccid paralysis) which may include:
- spinal polio affecting lower limbs and/or bulbar polio
- ± respiratory failure.
No sensory loss.

Management
A
Refer symptomatic paralytic patients to hospital.
Childhood immunisation vital.
