What measures were taken to isolate Jews in late 1941?
Radio sets confiscated and Jews banned from buying radios
Excluded from rationing allowances for clothing and shoes
Could only enter shops between 4pm and 5pm
Had to have a police permit to travel
What was operation Barbarossa?
June 1941 - German armies swept across USSR, occupying territories in Poland, Baltic states, Russia and Ukraine
What was Ghettoisation?
One solution to deal with huge Jewish population was creation of ghettos
First set up with barricades, then walls, then kept under guard
Homes confiscate, had to sell valuables to survive, restricted food, medical supplies
Spread of disease and lice infestations
What were the Einsatzgruppen?
Special groups
Sent to eliminate communist officials
Carried out numerous killings of Soviet Jews in 1941, half a million killed in June and July
Responsibilities included mass shootings of Jews, 7000 killed in Poland in 1939
